From: A Quick Guide to the GPLv3 - The Free Software Foundation http://www.gnu.org/licenses/quick-guide-gplv3.html
"Nobody should be restricted by the software they use. There are four freedoms that every user should have:
-the freedom to use the software for any purpose,
-the freedom to share the software with your friends and neighbors,
-the freedom to change the software to suit your needs, and
-the freedom to share the changes you make.
When a program offers users all of these freedoms, we call it free software.
Developers who write software can release it under the terms of the GNU GPL. When they do, it will be free software and stay free software, no matter who changes or distributes the program. We call this copyleft: the software is copyrighted, but instead of using those rights to restrict users like proprietary software does, we use them to ensure that every user has freedom."
Essentially the GPL gives you the freedom to use the software as you see fit, to distribute software far and wide without restrictions, to modify the software to suit your use and to share the changes you make. This also gives you the ability to contribute collaboratively to a community project such as Somatic Imagineering. Additionally the GPL prevents the appropriation of software toward restrictive or proprietary ends.
Why Am I releasing these macros under the GPL? I personally believe in free/open source software. For years I used the Macintosh operating system. A couple of years ago I began migrating to the Ubuntu Linux operating system and should complete this migration within the next year. I use free/open source software almost exclusively so it only makes sense that any software that I write should be free as well. Additionally I want this system to remain free and the GPL will protect the project and insure its continued freedom no matter who or what modifications are made to it.
Please review the terms of the GPL here.
ImageJ is public domain. The GPL applies only to the Somatic Imagineering macro set and not the ImageJ program which it uses.
